Garmin, the global leader in outdoor gear, has bought a pet GPS provider to help boost its popularity among pets and help it better compete with competitors.
The company, based in Santa Clara, California, announced its purchase of PetGPS Solutions on Tuesday.
The pet-tracking app is the company’s second pet-oriented acquisition, after it bought DogGPS in October 2015 for $9.9bn.
Garmin also purchased GPS platform Zune in August 2016 for $11.8 billion.
“We believe pet tracking is a critical and growing market and we’re excited to work with PetGps to bring it to Garmin customers,” Garmin chief executive Eric Baker said in a statement.
“Our customers, from pet owners to outdoor enthusiasts, have long relied on PetGp, which is a leader in pet-centric GPS solutions.
PetGP is one of the most trusted pet-based GPS solutions on the market, and we look forward to bringing it to new customers in the coming months.”
PetGps is a pet-focused GPS platform that’s based on the Open Source GPS code.
The PetGpen system will integrate with Garmin’s popular smartphone app and allows owners to track their pets via smartphone or through a web portal.
It was created by DogGps founder and CEO Tom Tabor and is available for download on the Garmin website.
PetGPS has been used by some 300 million pets around the world, according to the company.
Garmin has about 30 million PetGPs in use.
The Garmin-owned PetGpn service will be available on iOS, Android and Windows platforms.
It will have a free 30-day trial of the app, which will cost $99.99 per year.
Petgps’ chief executive, Paul Tabor, said the company will invest $100 million in the company over three years, to expand its customer base and reach new markets.
He said PetGpps is looking to increase adoption in pet users and the PetGport will be built on top of the best technologies in PetGpoS and PetGPort, which allows PetGPN to handle all aspects of pet tracking.
Pet GpP’s co-founder, Jason Bales, said in an interview that the Pet Gps platform will allow for the integration of GPS data with the user’s pet’s location.
Pet GPS is currently used by more than 3 million dogs worldwide.
PetGs is also a pet tracking app that has more than 20 million users.
